When analyzing a sandwich structure, one should keep in mind the following idealizations and general assumptions:

The core height is very much greater than the thickness of the face sheet.

The strains vary linearly through the thickness of the core.

The face sheets only transmits principle stresses in the 1, 2 and 6 directions; the in-plane strains are uniform through the thickness of the skins.

The transverse shear stresses in the 4 and 5 are neglected within the face sheet; however, the core transmits transverse shear stresses in the 4 and 5 direction while the 1,2 and 6 direction stresses are neglected.

The out-of-plane strains (e3) are neglected in both the sheets and the core.
